| A bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense was observed for the first time in Thau iagoon between November and December 1998. Maximum cell concentrations detected in shellfish farming areas (85 000 Cells/1) were high enough to make mussels and clams unsuitable for human consumption (max. 850 ug. STX eq.100 g'1) while toxic levels in oysters did not exceed, or even reach, the international public health threshold established for PSP toxins. | The global push toward free trade and the consequent rise in volume of imports from a wider range of countries incurs the likelihood of introducing unwanted pathogens. Given that a zero-risk quarantine policy is not possible, there are tradeoffs between the gains from international trade and the potential costs to society of disease incursions. | This paper investigates empirically the factors that influence real agricultural wage rates in Ghana, based on 1957 to 1991 data. The Johansen cointegration framework is used to examine long-run relationships among agricultural and urban wage rates, the domestic terms of trade between agriculture and nonagriculture, urban unemployment, capital stock in agriculture and the size of the rural population. An error correction model is then used to investigate short-run dynamic relationships among the variables. | Diatom and coccolithophorid abundance and diatom assemblage composition found in the water column along the Portuguese margin, during upwelling and non-upwelling conditions, are compared to the distribution patterns observed in the recent sediments from the same area. The water column results indicate a one order of magnitude increase in phytoplankton biomass during upwelling conditions (summer), with diatoms being the most important contributors. | Este trabalho foi realizado com cruzamentos simples (dialelo completo) dentro de três linhagens fêmeas (PP, KK e VV). O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados consistindo de nove cruzamentos, de três blocos de 81 aves. As características de produção de ovos, no total de doze, foram número de ovos da 24ª - 32ª, 32ª - 40ª, 40ª - 48ª, 48ª - 56ª, 56ª - 64ª, 22ª - 66ª, 32ª - 66ª, 40ª - 66ª, 48ª - 66ª, 24ª - 40ª, 24ª - 48ª e 24ª - 56ª semana de vida das aves.
